Description

Donaghadee is a quaint town on the northeast coast of the Ards Peninsula, dating back to the 17th century. Its impressive lighthouse was built in 1836 and in 1934 became the first lighthouse in Ireland to be lit by electricity.
The purpose of a lighthouse is to emit light, warning seafarers that there is danger ahead! The Bible, which is the Word of God, acts as a lighthouse to all mankind who are travelling on the sea of life. In Psalm 119 v 105 we read, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

The Bible clearly shows us that “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3 v 23). Every day we sin against a Holy God, by having wrong thoughts, saying wrong words and doing wrong actions. God warns us that the consequence of our sinful life is eternal punishment in the lake of fire forever. To ignore the warning light emitting from a lighthouse will result in catastrophe for those sailing on dangerous seas, so those who ignore God’s warnings of coming judgement will be shipwrecked forever, with no hope of ever being saved.

Are you willing today to pay attention to the warning light and consider carefully where you are sailing to when your life is over? You could die today! Will you disembark in heaven or in hell? The choice is yours!

After a number of shipwrecks off the North Down coast, it was decided in 1904 that a lifeboat station would be built in Donaghadee. The first Lifeboat was launched on 10th July 1910, and was called the “William & Laura”. Today, as shown in the photograph, Donaghadee is home to one of the most modern Lifeboats in the world, equipped to carry out sea rescues in even the very worst of conditions.

In order that you and I might not perish in the storms of God’s coming wrath and eternal judgement He had devised a rescue plan even before Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden. His plan of love for us was put into action almost 2000 years ago when His One and only sinless Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, climbed the hill of Calvary outside the city of Jerusalem, and willingly allowed Roman soldiers to crucify Him to a Cross. There, that Good Friday afternoon, the sinless Saviour died in the place of guilty sinners like you and me; “The Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2 v 20).

On 31st January 1953 the Cross-channel ferry MV Princess Victoria foundered in severe storm force conditions approximately 8.5 miles of Donaghadee. The Lifeboat was launched and headed out on the turbulent sea and picked up 33 survivors of the disaster. Sadly 133 were not able to be saved and perished in sight of home. The courageous rescuers wanted to save everyone but due to the adverse conditions, they were unable to do so.

God’s rescue plan is SO great that not only does He want to save you from the penalty of your sin but HE IS ABLE to rescue ALL who are willing to repent of their sin and place their faith alone in Jesus; like those rescued from the sinking Princess Victoria, realising that they could do absolutely nothing to save themselves, they depended entirely on those who were able to rescue them. Doing good works, living a religious life, doing nobody any harm or going to church cannot save us. We need someone who has the ability to rescue us…. Jesus alone can save! “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1st Timothy 1 v 15).

Not only did Christ die to save us but today He is a living Saviour! Three days after His death and burial God raised Him from the dead! Jesus is alive! He can save you now and change your life completely. He can give you a reason for living and hope in the moment of death. Can you look back to a definite time in your life when you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour? If not, why not trust Him now? The choice is yours and yours alone!

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.  (John 3 v 16).
